Why Shipping Matters
You've received a great quote for your trade-in. The last thing you want is damage during shipping that reduces your payout. Shipping damage is one of the top reasons for quote adjustments, and it's entirely preventable.
General Shipping Rules
DO:
- Use a sturdy corrugated box (double-wall if shipping heavy items)
- Wrap devices individually in bubble wrap or foam
- Fill ALL empty space in the box with packing material
- Use the "shake test" — if it moves inside the box, add more padding
- Seal with quality packing tape (not masking or duct tape)
- Ship with tracking and insurance
DON'T:
- Ship in a padded envelope (insufficient protection)
- Use newspaper as sole padding (compresses too easily)
- Ship multiple loose items in one box without individual wrapping
- Leave devices powered on during shipping
- Include liquids, batteries (external), or accessories not part of the trade-in
Device-Specific Packing Guidelines
Smartphones
- Power off the device
- Remove SIM card and SD card
- Wrap in anti-static bubble wrap (or regular bubble wrap)
- Place in a small box or rigid sleeve
- Add padding on all sides (minimum 2 inches of cushion)
- If using original box, wrap that in bubble wrap too
Laptops
- Power off and unplug
- Close the lid securely
- Place in a laptop sleeve or wrap in foam sheeting
- Use a box at least 3 inches larger than the laptop on all sides
- Fill bottom with crumpled paper or foam peanuts
- Place wrapped laptop in the center
- Fill all remaining space with padding
- Include charger in a separate bag if required
Desktop Components (GPUs, CPUs, RAM)
GPUs:
- Place in an anti-static bag (critical!)
- Wrap in bubble wrap
- Use a box that supports the card without bending
- Never ship a GPU in just a padded envelope
- Original box is ideal — it's designed for shipping
CPUs:
- Place in the plastic clamshell (the one it came in)
- If no clamshell, use a small rigid box with foam padding
- NEVER let pins touch anything — use the protective cover
- Anti-static bag is essential
RAM:
- Place in anti-static bags
- Use a small padded envelope inside a box
- RAM is relatively durable but pins must be protected
Tablets
- Same approach as smartphones but with a larger box
- Pay extra attention to screen protection (larger screens = more vulnerable)
- Avoid placing anything directly on the screen
Gaming Consoles
- Wrap in bubble wrap or foam
- Use a box with 3+ inches of padding on all sides
- Place controllers separately, wrapped individually
- Remove any discs from the drive
- Original box is always preferred
