Why Battery Health Matters
Battery health is one of the first things inspected during a trade-in evaluation. A phone with 95% battery health can be worth $50-80 more than the same model at 80%.
How to Check Battery Health
iPhone
- Open Settings
- Tap Battery
- Tap Battery Health & Charging
- Look at Maximum Capacity
What the Numbers Mean
- 95-100%: Excellent — full trade-in value
- 90-94%: Very Good — minimal deduction ($10-20)
- 85-89%: Good — moderate deduction ($20-40)
- 80-84%: Fair — noticeable deduction ($40-70)
- Below 80%: Apple recommends replacement — significant deduction ($70-120)
Performance Capability
Below Battery Health, you'll also see a Performance Capability section:
- "Peak Performance Capability": Your battery is functioning normally
- "Performance Management Applied": Your phone has been throttled due to battery degradation
- "Performance management has been turned off": You've disabled throttling
If performance management is applied, this indicates significant battery wear.
How Battery Health Affects Trade-In Pricing
At DepxTech, battery health is factored into your quote through our condition assessment:
The Math
For an iPhone 15 Pro (128 GB) in otherwise excellent condition:
- 95%+ battery: $480 (full value)
- 90% battery: $460 (-$20)
- 85% battery: $440 (-$40)
- 80% battery: $410 (-$70)
- 75% battery: $370 (-$110)
The deductions increase exponentially below 85% because battery replacement becomes necessary.
How to Maintain Battery Health
If You're Planning to Trade In Soon
These tips won't dramatically improve your current health, but they'll prevent further degradation:
- Avoid extreme temperatures — heat is the #1 battery killer
- Use Optimized Battery Charging (Settings > Battery > Battery Health)
- Avoid wireless charging when possible — generates more heat
- Keep charge between 20-80% for daily use
- Remove your case while charging if it traps heat
The 80% Charge Limit
iOS 17+ offers an 80% charge limit option. While this extends long-term battery health, it's usually not worth enabling if you're trading in within a few months.
Should You Replace Your Battery Before Trading In?
The Cost-Benefit Analysis
Apple battery replacement costs:
- iPhone 15/16 series: $99
- iPhone 14 and earlier: $89
If a new battery would increase your trade-in value by more than the replacement cost, it makes sense. For example:
- Current quote with 78% battery: $370
- Estimated quote with 100% battery: $480
- Difference: $110 — worth the $99 replacement
If the difference is marginal (battery at 88% or above), skip the replacement.
Pro Tips
- Check battery health before listing — know your number
- Don't lie about battery health — it's easily verified during inspection
- Charge to 50% before shipping — this is the safest level for lithium batteries in transit
- Check cycle count (via analytics data or third-party apps) — lower is better
