Before You Start

Back Up Your Data

1. Use Time Machine with an external drive
2. Or sync important files to iCloud Drive
3. Export your Photos library if not using iCloud Photos
4. Save your browser bookmarks and passwords to a password manager

Check Your AppleCare Status

If you have active AppleCare+, you may want to transfer it to a new device or cancel it for a prorated refund.

Step 1: Sign Out of Everything

Sign Out of iCloud

1. Click the Apple menu > System Settings
2. Click your name at the top
3. Scroll down and click Sign Out
4. Choose to keep a copy of your data on the Mac (it will be erased later)

Sign Out of iMessage

1. Open the Messages app
2. Go to Messages > Settings > iMessage
3. Click Sign Out

Deauthorize iTunes/Apple Music

1. Open the Music app (or iTunes on older macOS)
2. Go to Account > Authorizations > Deauthorize This Computer

Unpair Bluetooth Devices

Remove any paired devices like AirPods, keyboards, or mice from Bluetooth settings.

Step 2: Erase and Reinstall macOS

For Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3/M4)

1. Shut down your Mac completely
2. Press and hold the power button until you see "Loading startup options"
3. Click Options to enter Recovery Mode
4. Select Disk Utility from the recovery menu
5. Select your main drive (usually "Macintosh HD")
6. Click Erase — choose APFS format
7. Close Disk Utility
8. Select Reinstall macOS and follow the prompts

For Intel Macs

1. Restart and immediately hold Command + R
2. Follow the same Disk Utility steps as above
3. Reinstall macOS from Recovery

Step 3: Set Up for the New Owner

After macOS finishes reinstalling:

1. When you see the Setup Assistant, press Command + Q to shut down
2. This leaves the Mac in a "fresh out of the box" state
3. The new owner will complete setup with their own Apple ID

Step 4: Physical Preparation

• Clean the screen with a microfiber cloth
• Wipe the keyboard and trackpad
• Remove any stickers or cases
• Include the original charger if possible

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Don't skip signing out of iCloud — Activation Lock will prevent the new owner from using the device
• Don't just delete files — Use Disk Utility to fully erase the drive
• Don't forget about Find My Mac — This must be disabled before trading in
• Don't reset NVRAM/PRAM on Apple Silicon — It's not needed and can cause issues
